My 1st Public Molestation

June 27, 2010

Pregnancy is a peculiar thing.  From friends and family, I’ve heard about it all.  Morning sickness, big boobs, weight gain, cankles, peeing on yourself, and any other affliction it can or will cause.  So far, I’ve had the experience of morning sickness, bigger boobs (Love it!) and cankles.  Here’s the thing…hearing about it is one thing but actually experiencing it is quite another.  Another thing I’ve often heard about is belly fondling.  Up until this point, at 25 weeks, I’ve fallen victim to it from friends and family members which isn’t really a big deal.  I think it’s kinda funny that they’re so excited and can’t help themselves.  Well, today, I fell victim to belly fondling from a complete stranger and I was horrified.  It was like a scene from Deliverance.  Let me set the scene…

On this lazy Sunday morning, Mr. B and I set out for a late breakfast.  We decided on Waffle House.  I know what you’re thinking but it’s a guilty pleasure turned craving since I found myself pregnant.  You just can’t beat those waffles and hash browns, can you?  I think not!  So, as we entered the Waffle House today, we were greeted by a friendly waitress.  Naturally, she saw my belly and got this creepy ass smile from ear to ear.  Then, she proceeded to stare.  After we placed our order, she began with the 20 questions…How far along are you?  Do you know what you’re having?  Where will you be delivering?  Do you have a name picked out?  I answered them politely but got more and more creeped out.  Then, she reached over and RUBBED MY BELLY!  GASP!!!!!  I was in shock.  I can’t even fathom asking personal questions to a perfect stranger, much less touching their belly.  Seriously!   What the fuck is wrong with people?  Why did she need to know that information?  Is she a hopeful stalker waiting to carve my baby out of my belly or stage a kidnapping at the hospital?  Mr. B and I now have a plan about answering those questions.  “We’re not sure” seems to cover all of them.  I’d love to hear your experiences and/or suggestions on how to deal with this.  In a couple of months, I guess I’ll have to deal with people touching Baby B.  I just can’t even imagine why people think it’s OK to do that.  Here’s hoping there won’t be a next time.

Oh no! You know when I was reading the beginning of your story that’s exactly what came into my mind.. why does this woman need to know all these info?? People like that creep me out! One good, but not so correct way of getting away from answering these questions is saying: “I am not pregnant… are you calling me fat!”LOL That should stop any further comments or rubbing. Another way to get away from it is just be vague and at the risk of coming across rude just ignore the question and smile at them as in to say.. “I am not going to answer any of your silly questions”. It has not happened to me yet.. I’ll let you know how it goes when it does!

Ha, that’s a little funny. If you think it is bad now wait until you are toteing a little one around. Having a kid is like entering a new club. People start up random conversations all the time and you may find you do the same thing when you are sitting at the park and there is a tot who is particularly cute or seems like your child’s age. I’ve found it’s easier and kind of fun to go with it.

PS- The groping stops (at least for you) after the pregnancy. Then the kid gets it for a while. ( That was the part that bugged me. I didn’t like germy people trying to touch my newborn.)
